Preparing for a move: a week-by-week checklist
Start preparing about four weeks before moving day. First agree the date and the moving company, then sort your belongings and arrange removal of anything you will not take. In the final week, pack everyday items and prepare a box for your first evening.
Packing takes the most time. Last-minute details cause the most stress: keys, the lift and parking. Below is a plan week by week and a checklist for moving day.
Four weeks before: book, sort and measure
Agree the date early, especially if you want to move at a weekend or at the end of the month. For a quote, send both addresses, the floors, lift details and a list of large items. The moving cost page explains what affects the price.
- Go through each room: what comes with you, what to sell or give away and what to throw out.
- Measure large furniture and the doorways in your new home.
- If old furniture is left over, arrange old furniture removal now.
Two weeks before: get boxes and start packing
Get boxes, tape and bubble wrap. Our guide to moving boxes helps you estimate how many you need. Start with the things you do not use every day.
- Pack seasonal clothes, books, decorations and storage items first.
- Write the room and contents on every box, for example “Kitchen, dishes, fragile”.
- Put heavy items in small boxes and light items in large ones. More tips: how to pack for a move.

One week before: lift, parking and the kitchen
- Agree lift use and a parking spot for the truck at both buildings.
- Pack most of the kitchen, leaving out a few dishes and the kettle.
- Empty the fridge and defrost the freezer a day or two before the move.
- Give your new address to your bank, your employer and anyone who sends you bills or parcels.
Moving day: what to keep with you
- Put documents, keys, chargers and medicines in a separate bag that does not go in the truck.
- Pack a first-evening box with bedding, towels, toiletries, a kettle and a few dishes.
- Before you leave, check every room, cupboard, the balcony and the cellar storage.
- Photograph the meter readings in both the old and the new home.
Help with packing and furniture assembly
Moving24 carries, transports and reassembles your furniture. Dismantling and reassembling furniture and stretch wrap are included in the move, and we can also pack your belongings if you wish. Full packing and boxes are charged separately.

If you would rather hand the heavy work to a crew, see what our home move includes and when a packing service is worth it. The moving cost page explains how the price is made up, and all our services are on the moving company in Tallinn page.
