How to pack for a move
Put heavy items in small boxes and light items in large ones, fill the gaps so nothing moves, and write the room and contents on each box. Wrap dishes one by one in paper and stand plates on edge. Keep a TV upright.
Do not make a box too heavy: it can tear and is hard to lift safely. Below are instructions item by item and a list of things that should not go in a moving box.
What you need for packing
- Boxes: standard boxes, plus wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes.
- Strong packing tape and a marker.
- Bubble wrap and paper for fragile items.
- Stretch wrap to protect furniture.

How to pack dishes so they do not break
- Put a layer of crumpled paper in the bottom of the box.
- Wrap every plate and glass separately in paper.
- Stand plates on edge instead of stacking them flat.
- Fill the gaps with paper so nothing can move.
- Write “Dishes, fragile” on the box and show which way up it goes.
How to pack a TV without its original box
- Remove the cables and the remote and put them in a labelled bag.
- Wrap the screen in a blanket or bubble wrap.
- Keep the TV upright and never lay it screen down.
- Do not put anything on top of it.
Also follow the manufacturer's transport instructions for your model and avoid pressure on the screen.
How to pack clothes, books and small items
- Hang clothes straight into a wardrobe box on their hangers.
- Put books in small boxes, because they are heavy.
- Collect small items in smaller boxes first, then put those in a large box.
- Put furniture screws and fittings in a bag and attach it to the piece they belong to.
What not to put in moving boxes
- Keep documents, money, keys and medicines with you.
- Mark flammable liquids and chemicals separately and agree their transport in advance.
- Use up perishable food before the move.
