You cannot tell exactly how many boxes you need from the size of your home, because it depends on how much you own. A practical way to estimate: pack one ordinary cupboard or shelf into trial boxes, then multiply by the number of similar cupboards and shelves.

Estimate boxes by cupboard, not by room
Count wardrobes, bookshelves and kitchen cupboards. Pack one shelf or cupboard as a trial, then multiply by the number of similar units. Add storage rooms, bedding and loose items, which are easy to overlook.

Second-hand boxes are fine if they are dry, clean and undamaged. Soft corners, torn seams or damp cardboard make a box unreliable. Remove old labels before adding your own.

How to seal and label a box
- Tape the bottom across the seams, not with just one strip.
- Keep the contents below the rim, so the lid closes flat.
- Fill the gaps, so the contents cannot move.
- Write the room and contents on the side as well as the top.
